After 16 years wonderful service, Valerie Hocking has retired from her post as Musical Director for the City of Coventry Male Voice Choir.
Valerie is well known in Coventry's music circles, not just for her work with the CCMVC, but also as the MD and organist at St Mary's Church, Wolston. and, as Musical Director for both the Wolston Village Voices choir and also the Heart of England Co-op Ladies choir, which is based in Coventry.
Valerie's musical knowledge and distinctive and elegant style of conducting will be sadly missed by the CCMVC and also by the many admirers that she has built up over the years that she has been with us. The choir was first formed in 1946 and it is a tribute to Valerie's professionalism that we still attract new members and go from strength to strength.
In recognition of her service the choir invited Valerie to become. Honorary President of the City of Coventry Male Voice Choir and we are very pleased to say she accepted, and at our last rehearsal in 2015, Nigel Ward, the choir chairman, presented her with a custom made brooch incorporating the choir logo. As a token of our appreciation.
In her acceptance speech Valerie said what a difficult decision it was, to retire from the choir, as it was like leaving a well loved family; but she knew that this was the right time.
The conductors baton has now been taken up by Sally Aitchison. Having joined as a teenager, Sally was for many years the Principal Accompanist for the choir and over the last two years she has been Deputy Musical Director, so we know that the choir is in safe hands and look forward to the next phase of our musical journey.

In October we held a special anniversary concert at Queens Road Baptist Church where we were joined by The World Song Choir. The ‘afterglow’ was held in the Ramada hotel, where we were presented with a suitably iced cake which was quickly demolished by choir members and supporters of the choir!
The choir featured on both radio and TV. We were invited to attend the studios of C&W radio where we sang several numbers and certain choristers together with our MD were interviewed.
A few weeks later we appeared on television in the RegionalNews on BBC1
